Vision and Objective

Climate changes are happening now and the results are disastrous: Flodings, droughts and decreased outputs in agriculture leading to hunger. The rich countries of the world are responsible for the climate changes – while the poor countries bear the burden.

From Kenya to Bangladesh, however, people are already adapting to climate changes in incredible ways, despite the fact that they have almost not contributed to the pollution leading to global warming.

As Justin Lin, chief economist at the World Bank, says: “About 75 to 80 percent of the damages caused by global warming will be suffered by developing countries, although they only contribute to about one-third of the greenhouse gasses.” To compensate for the damages caused to developing countries, the rich countries need to pay their climate debt – created through years and years of pollution.

Denmark as the host country should go in front and pay their climate debt of 5 billion kroner every year. This amount is based on calculations from the United Nations and ActionAid International. See the ActionAid report “Rich countries pay your ‘climate debt’ and how they can repay it – An ActionAid rough guide” here.

If we as citizens speak up with one clear voice, we can make the politicians follow. Therefore we need more climate debt agents – join us here.
